DESCRIPTION:

The Running of the Bulls is celebrated in Pamplona, Spain in honor of the Festival of San Fermin, which runs July 6-14 each year. The actual running of the bulls begins on July 7.

Apart from the putting themselves in the path of bulls, people also come to this town to experience fireworks, music and some dancing. For the most part, adventure seekers, locally known as mozos come for the Running of the Bulls. Originally observed only on the festival day, this celebration now runs for nine days, wherein the bulls are released at 8 in the morning. Runners must be ready before that, exactly at 7:30 in the morning. The run is 825 meters from start to finish and, on the average, lasts for three minutes.

The Running of the Bulls is televised across the nation.

For the Spanish people, bulls represent power and life. The mozos, or the revelers, are required to wear white shirts and pants with red bandanas on their necks and waists to honor San Fermin, a martyred saint who was beheaded by the French in 303AD.

The festival began in 1196AD and the original runners were butchers. A sound of a rocket signals the start of the run. After the bulls run, revelers go to bars to have their breakfast.
